Alexander grew up in Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. He trained at Salisbury College of Art and Exeter College of Art, where he gained an honours degree. He then continued his artistic career working as a commercial Illustrator for ten years, travelling widely to China, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Scandinavia, USA and Romania.
Highly collectable and with an increasing reputation in the UK, Alexander paints seascapes in oil, working from nature. His style can be described as contemporary romanticism, drawing on the tradition of European landscape painting with detailed yet uniquely textural application of paint. Alexander cites influences such as Andrew Wyeth, Bruegel, Ron Bolt and Ivan Aivazovsky.
"I find myself responding to the challenge of trying to paint nature with an honest crystal clarity. A combination of realism and romanticism, rich tones and the elusive feel of stillness and quiet. I work in a highly representational way, however with closer inspection the paint appears gloriously abstract...".
