Angela Charles' paintings are inspired by her surroundings, both around her home in South Somerset and her travels in the UK and abroad. Chesil Beach in Dorset appears often in her work and holds a special significance for her. Working from quick pen sketches bought back to her studio, she begins to work on her memory of the place and her feelings whilst there, rather than the direct representation of the landscape. Angela will often start a painting greatly inspired by something that in the end product isn't visible, due to her becoming so deeply absorbed in the whole process.

Working on boards which are spray primed, Angela never allows any texture or mark other than her own, to grace the surface. Working by building up layers of sanded down paint, she knows that all the layers will become part of the work whether they are revealed or not. The paintings are then subjected to her incisive mark making, either by adding to the surface with the likes of a pencil or taking away with her cherished dentist's tool.

Sometimes collage finds its way into her work; maybe the sandpaper used to sand back the layers or the torn edge of a box used to wipe away the paint. Angela has successfully exhibited throughout the UK in various prestigious galleries.
